What to expect

Our aim is to get you out of pain and also to identify and correct the underlying cause of your condition. Once we’ve found the root of the problem we use safe, gentle and effective treatments to put you on the road to recovery.

What happens at the first visit?

On your first visit to Shaftesbury Chiropractic, we’ll discuss your symptoms and what you’d like to achieve. We’ll take a detailed history of your existing problem and also your medical history including operations, accidents or illnesses that may have a bearing on your present health.

After the history we’ll give you a thorough examination, which looks at the function of the joints and muscles most commonly associated with your problem. We’ll also check your spine for any areas of abnormal movement or restriction.

We’ll explain our findings to you in detail and tell you if you need further investigations or a referral to your GP. If your condition allows we will start treatment there and then to get you feeling more comfortable.

Next steps

At your second appointment we give you a report that explains your condition and recommends a course of treatment – including managing your own recovery. We use a number of chiropractic techniques to restore normal movement, and reduce the interference to your nerves and muscles that cause pain. The number of appointments that you will need varies according to the type of problem and from person to person. Your chiropractor will discuss your treatment plan with you.

Chiropractic adjustment

We use a specific manual thrust or mobilisation to help improve the movement of your spine and other joints in the body. Adjustments free up spinal joints that are "locked" or not moving correctly.

Activator methods

An activator is a simple hand held instrument we use to give a precise and gentle thrust to mobilise and realign your joints.

SOT - Sacro-Occipital Technique

Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT) is a system of chiropractic originally developed by Dr M.B. DeJarnette. Best known for cranial work, SOT also involves detailed analysis and correction of the spine, pelvis, extremities and visceral system. Using gravity, joint mobilisation and muscle release we realign your pelvis with your head, neck and shoulders.

Exercise, Rehabilitation and Advice

Your chiropractor will be happy to give you specific exercises to help strengthen and stabilise your spine. This will build on the progress you have made and helps to make the changes more lasting.
